Once you go L, you never go back

By Colin Charles

They say once you go black, you never go back. Well, I say, once you go L, you never go back. That red ring on the lens, is just amazing.

I’m raving about the 17-40/f4L. At first, I thought that f4 might be a little too limited for my means. I really wanted the 16-35/f2.8L (or even the 17-35/f2.8L that was available second-hand, but the condition was awful) but I couldn’t find any in the usual stores I haunt.

Its a great lens. Image quality is crisp. Don’t let the f4 bit fool you. Its also what a good flash unit is for. Needless to say, that since I’ve put the lens on my camera (its been a few weeks), I’ve hardly ever taken it off. I’ve not loved a lens this much since the 50/f1.4.

The range is great on the 1.6x crop bodies, and really wide on a full frame (film, in my case). There are good reviews of this lens everywhere else, so I don’t need to provide one. Just remember to enjoy it, if you can afford it (I should probably add this is one of the most affordable L-series lenses you’ll get your hands on).

And if you’re wondering where that photo came from, its at the Southern Cross Station in Melbourne. Note some rules when you photograph there.
