Zooomr

I decided to give Zooomr a try. Partially because I’d get a free pro account. Partly because I wanted to take a gander at what else was available, besides Flickr (which I’ve grown to love).

Executive summary: Its not Flickr. It seems a lot slower than Flickr, in Safari. It has ads. It doesn’t have a “blog this” button. Do groups exist?

It does support trackbacks. I like this. Flickr should consider implementing trackbacks, so people blogging my photos don’t have to tell me they’re blogging it.

I like that jUploadr is recommended, but at the same time wonder if this is the real solution on Linux. I tried it ages ago for Flickr, and didn’t like it.

Oh and the image above. Taken in Ottawa, in 2005, I think. I don’t like the default alignment that Zooomr provides in its “all sizes” button.

    Sloooooooooooooow, slow slow slow!

    And the layout is ugly! :o

    Apparently groups “got taken out” at some point. I haven’t bothered to go back and see if they’ve re-appeared because I just haven’t found it to be a compelling alternative to flickr.

    The major turn-off for me is that the main (or only?) developer seems to spend more time talking about how Zooomr’s “going to make Flickr look Web 1.0″ rather than actually delivering. Do they have an API yet?

    Maybe it’ll improve with time, but they have a lot more work to do.

    What is the issue with jUploadr on Linux, anything specific, or just a matter of taste?

    @neom: agreed

    @cos: I don’t think they have an API yet, though I hear its very similar to Flickr’s. Haven’t bothered checking/connecting to see how it goes. I think there’s work to do, and I’ll be giving them a twirl from time to time…

    @andy: For one, it requires a JVM. Last time I tried it, it didn’t actually work using the free Java environment… And I’m not adept to using Sun’s produce.
